Cell phones can also incur additional charges for international calls.

For a cell phone, you have to dial the “+” symbol first. If you have a US cell phone, you don’t need to dial an exit code to call another US number, no matter where you are.

If you enter the wrong country calling code, you must start the process over. Hang up and start with the exit code and then enter the correct country code.

If you don’t know the area code, you search online for the area code of the region the person you are calling is in. Internet phones or VoIP numbers start with an 8 as the area code.

011 34 831 234 567. “011” is the exit code, “34” is the country code for Spain, “83” is the area code for Barcelona, and the rest are the specific phone number you are calling.

A calling card allows you to make international calls for a much cheaper rate than the basic rates offered by phone companies. The card holds a balance that is used to pay for each international call.

The cheapest options are not always the best ones!

Some calling cards list the PIN on the receipt after you purchase it. There are online calling cards you can use that may give you a PIN or ask you to create one. Don’t forget or lose your PIN number or you won’t be able to use the calling card.

If you enter the wrong PIN, hang up and dial the access number again or it may lock your card.

There may be a brief pause or a message stating that call is being connected.

Some applications will only allow you to call other people who also have the app and not to a landline or cell phone. If you are using an app to call a cell phone or landline in Spain, you will need to dial the US exit code (011) and the country calling code for Spain (34) before you dial the area code and phone number.

For video call apps or programs like FaceTime and Skype, you do not need to enter an exit code, but you do need to enter the country code for Spain (34) before dialing the number.

You will need a special VoIP adapter to use the service on a landline.
